Review: Following Your Heart – Jerry Eicher

The story of Susan and Teresa continues as they are faced with a new set of worries when they arrive at the home of Susan. Coming to the farm presents quite a few problems for both of our main characters. Susan has to face Thomas, the scoundrel who broke her heart, and deal with the fact that her parents want an answer as to when she will take her baptismal instruction. Thomas is a man on a mission and is not taking no for an answer. Being the spitfire that she is, Susan certainly puts him in his place! Both girls knew that this journey for Teresa to become Amish would not be peaches and cream, but after the Deacon speaks with Susan’s father, the road ahead looks rough. She simply can’t join the community with no strings attached. No, Teresa must marry the community joke, the insufferable Yost Byler. Susan is shocked and appalled when Teresa agrees.  Teresa will do just about anything to have her son become Amish. She could care less that she will be marrying for convenience and is willing to forgo happiness to save her son. The wheels are set in motion and Teresa will marry Yost on the day of her baptism…………You didn’t expect there to be no drama did you? Along comes James, the Deacon’s son, who becomes interested in Teresa, and the perfect plan for Teresa to become Amish gets a little complicated.

I enjoyed Following Your Heart immensely. Susan is full of spunk and speaks her mind even if it might ruffle a few tail feathers. That’s my kind of character! My only complaint was with Teresa who I found to be too hard on herself.  I wanted to jump onto the pages and give her a good shake!  She had a lot of issues with having her baby out of wedlock, and I found it to be too much at times.  Everyone deserves a happy ending, and if you don’t love yourself you will never find peace and contentment. Her desire to do what was best for her baby overshadowed her own well-being. Overall this book is an excellent read even if it did make me want to rough a character up!
