The Loyal Heart Review by Susan Scott Ferrell

the loyal heartI am most familiar with Shelley Shepard Gray as a pillar in the Amish genre. So, I was thrown for a loop when I saw a new release from Gray, set in the post-Civil War era. Although I am quite interested in this period of history I am a bit of a snob (hold your comments) when it comes to fiction, and usually gravitate towards Amish. But Gray delivers an outstanding historical fiction novel with her latest release, The Loyal Heart.

The Loyal Heart follows the life of Robert Truax, a former officer of the confederacy, who makes a war-time promise to his friend: If anything happens, look after his wife, Miranda. Robert remains loyal to that promise when he finds Miranda.

Miranda is reviled in her community and she is near her breaking point. Worst of all? It is rumored about town that her husband was a traitor! Robert is determined to make things right – and to get to the bottom of a mystery.

I was given The Loyal Heart for my honest review. I found it to be a captivating read…and even found myself cheering on Robert Truax! The Loyal Heart was a pleasant surprise and I look forward to more historical fiction from Shelley Shepard Gray. She’s definitely captured THIS reader!

Susan Ferrell and her husband make their home in the Atlanta Metro area. Although Susan struggles with chronic migraine headaches, she stays very busy as a stay-at-home mom to one very precocious little girl. While catching her breath, she feeds her Amishaholic tendencies by reading vast amounts of Amish literature!
