Hello readers! Beth Wiseman has a new book releasing on July 7th called Her Brother’s Keeper (An Amish Secrets Novel Book 1). For the next five days Beth will be sharing myth-busting facts/secrets about the Amish. She will top it off with a never-before-seen peek at the upcoming novella, A LOVE FOR IRMA ROSE which will be released in the December Amish collection, AN AMISH YEAR.
The Amish folks pay for their own medical expenses, and they don’t participate in health insurance plans. Sometimes, there is a community fund that members of the district contribute to, drawing from as needed. Most of the Plain People will try home remedies before venturing out to a doctor or hospital, but they still utilize modern medicine when necessary. They’ve also been known to travel to Mexico for treatment, due to the reduced costs associated with care and medication there.
Recently, I was in Indiana visiting a sick relative. I was able to stay in one of the Ronald McDonald houses offered by the hospital since I was from another state, with a loved one in ICU (all is well now!). But I saw several Amish people staying at the McDonald House—using electricity, air conditioning, microwaves, etc. There are exceptions to all rules, and that’s true for the Amish folks as well.
