The Amish folks pay for their own medical expenses, and they don’t participate in health insurance plans. Sometimes, there is a community fund that members of the district contribute to, drawing from as needed. Most of the Plain People will try home remedies before venturing out to a doctor or hospital, but they still utilize modern medicine when necessary. They’ve also been known to travel to Mexico for treatment, due to the reduced costs associated with care and medication there.

Recently, I was in Indiana visiting a sick relative. I was able to stay in one of the Ronald McDonald houses offered by the hospital since I was from another state, with a loved one in ICU (all is well now!). But I saw several Amish people staying at the McDonald House—using electricity, air conditioning, microwaves, etc. There are exceptions to all rules, and that’s true for the Amish folks as well.

  1. I sincerely have the most respect for the Amish and their beliefs, they set high standards for their children and are the best examples to them. I love reading Amish authors!

  2. I love reading about the Amish. These books keep me entertained. I know some authors were brought up Amish and now live in the Englisch world. How amazing to me. I respect those of other faiths but especially the Amish. Their suffering knows no boundaries. All in the name of faith.

  3. WE have several Amish Families living right on my Road… Their Yards and Gardens are well kept and the Children are very Hardworking too.. Love reading books featuring Amish Families…

  4. When my son was born premature, and was in the NICU at Akron Children’s, there was an Amish woman who was also there with her own son. Rarely was she ever without several family members by her side. She was never without a smile for me, and the compassion in her eyes was such a blessing during our difficult times. I pray that her son is a continued joy to her, as my own son is to me!

  5. i think many people just assume things about Amish people, so thank you for sharing! I live close to several Amish communities and it is so wonderful to converse with them. Such a nice, caring community who are always willing to lend a hand. I will sometimes even trade books with one of my Amish friends 🙂

  6. I worked at a hospital that had a house nearby for the Amish relatives of a patient to stay in. I always admired this, and always found the Amish patients and families to be very kind.
