Experience is the great teacher.” Amish proverb

PrintIn The Letters, horse trainer Galen King takes on an apprentice, Jimmy Fisher, despite many concerns. Jimmy is immature, impulsive, and “often wrong but never in doubt.” An exasperating personality! In fact, Galen only agrees to work with him because the deacon put some pressure on him and you don’t say no to a deacon. In this case, the deacon knew Jimmy loved horses and knew he needed to spend time with a man like Galen.

It wasn’t an easy pairing. Galen worked hard and talked little. Jimmy talked much and worked only when required. But little by little, Jimmy began to change. Slowly but surely, Galen grew impressed with him.

Apprenticeships for young people are common among the Amish. It ties in with their learn-by-doing philosophy. When work is to be done, the Amish don’t exclude children or young people and keep them at home. Instead, the children are part of the work party, given age-appropriate tasks.

What talents or skills did someone give to you? Most likely, some adult in your life taught you with patience and perseverance. Which ones can you pass along? You’re giving someone more than time, skills, and memories—you’re teaching them how to be lifelong learners.

  1. Excited about your new book!! I sometimes think the things we pass on to our children can be lessons we have learned. For instance, I told my children every day I loved them. I assured them of their inner, and outer beauty, I guess you could call us a touchy feely family, because we always hug 1 another. These are things I missed out on growing up. It is wonderful to see this sharing of love passed onto my grandchildren, and my daughters and son in law are even sharing. It is a blessing.

  2. I think as I’ve grown and gotten older, I’ve tried to be more like my mother. Patient, people lover, kind, etc I hope 🙂

  3. I believe what I have passed down to my children is to always do service for others, to be able and ready to help others when they are in need.

  4. The Letters sounds wonderful. Please enter me in contest. Thank you for the opportunity to win. I enjoy reading all of Suzanne Woods Fisher Books.

  5. i was passed down the lesson of charity. i make quilts all hand pieced and hand quilted and give them away. it helps others and i get to pay it forward. i would love to have all your books but with an income of less than four hundred dollars monthly for disability buy books, like buying fabric is just not in my budget and i hate that. thans for a great giveaway. barbara [email protected]

  6. This is a fun contest. The best thing my mom instilled (handed down) to me is values….keep your word, be honest, be truthful, be fair, be the best you can be to name a few. Also, taking me to church & Sunday School helped to lay my spiritual foundation. My grandma taught me the love of needlework. I have been so blessed in my life and I am thankful…Thanks for the opportunity to win. Linda

  7. I have learned do much from so many people, and try to be a teacher by example to my children and those around me. Can’t wait to read the new book!

  8. My mother passed on to me her knowledge and love of sewing, and though I had all boys, I’ve been able to share my love of sewing with others many times throughout the years, including teaching a Basic Sewing class to several young girls and their moms. It’s always fun to see that “spark” in a person’s eye when all of a sudden, they “get” it, and I know they will continue on, learn more, and hopefully pass their new knowledge and talent to many more.
Please enter me in the drawing. What a joy it will be to read this latest book of Suzanne’s!

  9. My maternal grandmother gave me a love for cooking and crocheting. I am passing the cooking on to my grandchildren, or at least trying!

  10. I have liked Destination Amish’s page n really like. I shared of fb. I was taught to crochet n quilt by my Grandma. I am teaching my two younger girls how to do the same. It also brings us together with giving us an afternoon together each day. I thank God for the gifts He has given me.

  11. Not sure if it is a talent or a skill, but my father passed along to me his love of reading. From sitting on his lap while he read, to asking him what a word was and also watching him devour the paper and anything else he could read, I learned to love the written word. Now, as a mother, Sunday School teacher and librarian, I hope to have passed that on to many others!

Suzanne, thank you for the wonderful words you write so that others can enjoy them!

  12. Hello Suzanne. I have been told I have the gift of gab. LOL I hope I leave for example my love for our LORD, and teaching my children how to be a caring and loving mother and grandmother. And, to be a good, faithful friend. Also things of good moral values.
I would love to be the winner of your book. Thanks for the chance to win. MAXIE mac262(at)me(dot)com

  13. Suzanne, I have shared this to my Facebook page for my family and friends encouraging them to check it out.
Please give me another entry. MAXIE mac262(at)me(dot)com

  14. My mom taught me to show compassion to others. She was also a sunday school teacher and I have been one too. I would love to read this book.

  15. My grandmother taught me various types of needlework – I embroidered my fist set of pillowcases with her when I was 6! She was so patient. I hope to pass my sewing talents to my grandkids – they have already made simple pillows.

  16. I’ve been blessed with the talent of playing the piano. I can read music, but also play by ear. My last piano teacher was fantastic and it was hard to be able to be selected to be her student. I auditioned and was chosen. After I was grown, I heard this lady was dying of cancer. She told me that she never thought there would be no one to play like her. She told me there are 3 people and I was one of them. That was one of the highest compliments anyone has ever paid me and meant so much. Looking forward to reading this book. Thank you for sharing and please enter me in the giveaway.

  17. I am blessed with a wonderful, homey kind of family.
Growing up, I saw beautiful flower gardens and vegetable gardens.
My mom, dad, Uncle Bill and paternal grandparents were all nature
lovers! My brother, who was much older than me, was a Veterinarian, so
animals were/are important in my life…Also, I sing pretty well!
    Many thanks, Cindi

  18. Your novels always capture my interest. I keep saying just one more chapter, but often I cannot stop reading until I reach the final word. 🙂 I can hardly wait for The Letters and would be overjoyed to win a copy. JoAnn Sorrell

  19. I have had a lot of influential people in my life, but to name a few, my mom and dad, who basically taught me everything, but especially how to live a life of faith, even when times were tough and provision seemed scarce, my grandparents who did the same and a few teachers who taught me the kind of teacher I wanted to be.

  20. My strongest and best teachers were family members. Watching my parents and grandparents give to others, help them, without thought of compensation taught me to be unselfish and to do for others. The best lesson that is possible to learn.

  21. My Aunt has mentored me in my Christian walk and in my life walk. She’s taught me the importance of a foundation in the Word and Prayer. Because of her, I have been able to mentor several ladies recently dealing with issues I have dealt with in the past.

    I also shared your link!

  22. My Mother now suffers from Alzheimer’s, so I now appreciate the fact that she taught me to knit as a child and I continue to this day. My sister and I were always told we couldn’t because we are left handed, so my mother taught us to knit right handed. This made me try other crafts as well, I cross stitch and make baskets. You can overcome challenges if you try.
