Hopeful by Shelley Shepard Gray finds us back in Sugarcreek, Ohio, the setting of her Seasons of Sugarcreek series. We get to visit with old friends from the previous books and meet a new cast characters. Miriam Zehr is put in a sticky situation when Junior Beiler, the man she secretly loves, asks for her help to land a date with none other than her good friend Mary Kate Hershberger.She agrees to help Junior but regrets doing so the moment she said yes. Sounds like trouble with a capital T. Being a baker, Miriam should know this is a recipe for disaster…pardon the pun…I just couldn’t help myself! Mary Kate has some troubles of her own and a past that she wants to keep hidden from everyone especially Junior. Where will the road of uncertainty lead these three…heartbreak or perhaps love?
I often wonder what makes Amish fiction appealing to others or for that matter what makes any book worth your time. For me, it’s that I enjoy reading books about where I live and I find it intriguing to know that so many others do to. It’s kind of weird yet fun knowing that people are reading about the streets I walk down or stores I shop at. What makes this book worth your time is that Hopeful is yet another stark reminder that Shelley is a wonderful storyteller who creates one of kind characters. She paints a very vivid picture of real life and keeps readers fully engaged….for this I am grateful…
