To break out into the Amish genre is a tremendous feat these days. The book market seems to have become inundated with what some are calling “bonnet books” and every person is now calling him or herself an author. It becomes difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff. Well, Amy Lillard is among the wheat. When I read Caroline’s Secret last year (first in the Wells Landing series), I knew there was a new name to add to the “must read” authors in the Amish market. When Courting Emily (the second in the series) arrived, I could not wait to see what journey Lillard was going to take me and the rest of her readers on!
Courting Emily tells of Emily Ebersol, a young Amish woman who is in love with childhood sweetheart, Luke Lambright. But Luke is still in his rumspringa. And although he is in love with Emily, he also has another love…racing cars. When Luke leaves the community to pursue his dream, Elam Riehl finally feels like he has a fair shot at Emily. Elam is very different from Luke, which makes for difficult decisions for all…especially when Luke comes back.
I was given Courting Emily in exchange for my honest review. Courting Emily was an engaging read. Although there were not any dramatic turns within the plot lines, they were chock-full of romance and just your basic ‘feel good’ moments. Courting Emily can be read as a stand-alone, but it does reference characters from Caroline’s Secret (so catch up!) All 342 pages went by extraordinarily fast and I was in love with all of the main characters (and maybe even more so with the characters of the subplots!) by the end. Lillard gives readers a teaser for the next in the series, Lorie’s Heart, and now I’m marking down the days to its release (looks phenomenal!) In the meantime, be sure to read Courting Emily. Amy Lillard has struck literary magic yet again!
