The Matchmaker – Another Winner – review by Susan Scott Ferrell
After reading Sarah Price’s novel First Impressions, the first in her Amish Classics series, I was greatly anticipating the release of her second in the series, The Matchmaker. Price has incredible skill at being able to take a Jane Austen classic and turn it into a delightful Amish story in its own right. She did it with First Impressions (an Amish retelling of Austen’s Pride and Prejudice), and she does it again with The Matchmaker, which is a retelling of Austen’s Emma.
The Matchmaker tells the story of Emma Weaver, a well-intentioned young Amish woman with a love for matchmaking. She’s certain that her “help” is necessary in her little community. Long-time neighbor and friend, Gideon King, is aware of her dealings and warns her not to dabble in the lives of others. But when Emma doesn’t heed his warnings, calamity and heartbreak ensue. Is Emma’s reputation ruined? In the midst of all of this turmoil, might she find true love for herself?
I was given The Matchmaker in exchange for my honest review. It was a lovely, quick read and can easily be read as a stand-alone. The characters do use some Pennsylvania Dutch and sometimes they even sound a bit British…although, this is a retelling of an Austen classic! The Matchmaker is a definite winner. Price continues to expertly retell Austen’s classics and I look forward to reading the next in the series. Sarah Price never disappoints!
