As I began reading this book, I found myself transported into the world of a college professor, Jude Lyons, and his new Amish bride, Mary King. This story kept me spellbound the whole time.
The beginning of the story….
Jude left all the modern amenities of his life in metro Atlanta for a three month study of the Amish of Ice Mountain, given a grant from his university to do so. Being in the mountains with these Amish however, Jude got much more than he ever bargained for…reluctantly earning a bride in the process, by the hands of an outraged father.
One of the hardest things for Jude to process was their unfailing love and faith in God, of which he didn’t share the same belief, yet admired just the same.
Upon his descent from the mountain, with his study at its end and his new wife at his side, he decides to visit the ice mine once more, the place at the base of the mountain that started his journey. As he stood on the edge of a shaft, staring down into the 80 foot hole, Jude suddenly loses his footing and slips, falling into the shaft.
Catching himself, only by his hands, on the edge of the hole, he finds himself dangling, and realizes he is going to fall and die. With no one in the abandoned mine but his wife and her dog, he knew her strength would not enable her to save him.
As Mary held desperately to her husband’s hands, feeling panic set in, a man appeared behind her and hoisted Jude up out of the shaft and onto the icy floor of the cave.
After several long minutes, when Jude finally got his senses back and his footing was sure, he exited the cave, looking for the man who had saved him, wanting to offer his thanks. When the man was nowhere to be found, Jude questioned Mary, asking her who it was that had saved him, and where he had went. But Mary was confused, for there was no one else in that cave with them. There was never a man to be seen through the whole ordeal.
As Mary worried about her husband’s well being, Jude had just begun his path to discovering the wonders of God, the small beginnings of a new faith sparked by a man that no one else could see….
Throughout this book, you got to see the faith of a wife whose belief is so firm, slowly show a man who had no faith, how wonderous and real God is. Watching his wife and learning to love her, leads him to the best discovery of his life…God.
Kelly Long weaves a tale that leaves your heart beating faster and at times takes your breath away. While this is not published in the Christian fiction genre and there are a few steamy scenes, Kelly handles it with finesse and with her love of God shining through the pages. Definitely a 5-star in my book. I can’t wait for the next installment of The Amish of Ice Mountain series. Stay tuned…
