As a self-proclaimed “Amishaholic,” I was intrigued to get a copy of Plain Faith. I have read an obscene amount of Amish fiction titles, as well as quite a few non-fiction works about the Amish (by Kraybill, Nolt, Eicher, Wagler.) But this one looked different. Written by an ex-Amish couple, Irene and Ora Jay Eash, and co-authored by best-selling Amish fiction author Tricia Goyer, this book is unlike any I have ever read.
Plain Faith takes the reader along on an incredible journey. The Eashes, who have raised their family upon the foundation of generations of Amish forefathers before them, find themselves questioning their faith. Horrific tragedy has turned their life, their traditions, and their beliefs on end. They soon find themselves seeking respite and renewal in Montana. And as they search the Scriptures, the far-off, judging God they thought they knew, becomes their living God, full of grace and abiding love.
I was given this book in exchange for my honest review, and I must say – I was captivated by it. The Eashes graciously allow readers an insider’s view of the Amish community. Particularly interesting to me are the copies of many of their letters and circle letters to and from family and friends. Goyer fans will recognize some of the stories from her “Big Sky” series – as they were true-life events for the Eashes!
The Eashes journey of faith is inspiring, to say the least. To see how God has worked in and through their lives is a thing of beauty. Fellow Amishaholics – be sure to add this title to your own collection.
