The Tomato Patch: An Amish Novella By Sarah Price

What does the word “bully” mean to you? To me it has always made me think of that one kid in school who always had to be the center of attention; the meanie who just had to be first in line, always pushing and shoving to get what they wanted. The one kid always looking for a fight…usually succeeding in making someone cry. I am not that old and my how times have changed! Nowadays, children and even adults are faced with bigger bullies and even online attacks which in most cases are horrendous. Bullying certainly has taken on a whole new meaning. Sarah Price has written a unique little book that deals with the heavy subject of bullying occurring in a tight knit Amish community. In The Tomato Patch, Susie Byler has it out for Priscilla Smucker, who she thinks is copying her gardening techniques. Let’s just say Susie is not your typical Amish girl. She is mean, nasty, and really has it out for Priscilla. Susie throws out accusations right and left leaving poor Priscilla beside herself. We all can learn a little from sweet Priscilla. She held her head up high during adversity even though inside she was terrified. I love that! The Tomato Patch is a perfect book for all ages. The message is clear as day. Bullying can happen to anyone whether you are in kindergarten or an eighty-year old or even Amish….hurtful words can slice right through a person and last a lifetime……….

  1. I read the book the tomato patch , I truely enjoyed it , I also used it with my granddaughter , she was being bullied at school and she is in the 10th grade , so it seems it never stops no matter what age . it shows that even the Amish have this problem , but Priscilla knew how to handle it . Great book Sarah .
