I literally have a pile of books to review that is a mile high and while looking through them A Promise to Return by Elizabeth Byler Younts jumped out at me with its lovely cover. As I began to read I was immediately enthralled with the sweeping love story of Henry Mast and Miriam Coblentz. Right from the get-go I knew this book was something special because when I had to reluctantly put the book down to do the dreaded daily chores of cleaning, the characters never left my thoughts. As I loaded the washing machine there they were and as I vacuumed well they were there too! I rushed through everything just to pop back in and get caught up in the endearing, beautifully written, and deeply moving book.
In the midst of planning their wedding, Henry is drafted into World War II and life is never the same. When the Amish were drafted during the war they served their time at camps instead of going into battle. Henry feels God is telling him to fully enlist and join his fellow soldiers. Shocked, heartbroken, and overwhelmed, Miriam agrees to wait for Henry. The couple is faced with many obstacles that would tear some people apart: the threat of Henry being killed, distance, an overbearing suitor who wants Miriam all to himself and a very protective father. One thing that is constant and unwavering is Henry’s love for his girl and a promise he made…a promise to return….
As my pile of books grows day by day one thing is for sure…as soon as this wonderful author graces us with book two it will be at the top….
