Change is all Lily faces when her family moves to an Amish community in Pennsylvania. She has to make new friends, settle into her new home—which she thinks is ugly—and adjust to another new baby brother. (Still no sisters!) Even worse, a boy at school, Aaron Yoder, enjoys tormenting poor Lily. There are some bright spots about Lily’s new home—she has a wonderful teacher, and her relatives have moved close by. But there are a few lessons Lily needs to learn about starting over.

Lessoncover-248x384Centered on one of Suzanne Woods Fisher’s most loved characters, this is the story fans have eagerly anticipated. The precocious M.K. is all grown up (well, almost) and ready to take on the world-with surprising results. Fisher’s trademark plot twists and turns are as unexpected and satisfying as ever in this third book in the Stoney Ridge Seasons series.
In her wildest dreams, spunky and impulsive nineteen-year-old Mary Kate Lapp never imagined herself behind a schoolteacher’s desk. A run-in (literally) with the schoolteacher compels her to act as a substitute teacher, just as her restless desire to see the world compels her to apply for a passport . . . just in case. The only thing of interest to M.K. in the sleepy Amish community of Stoney Ridge is the unexplained death of a sheep farmer that coincided with the arrival of a mysterious young man into the community. Frustrated that no one takes the crime seriously, she takes matters into her own hands. Unfortunately, as tends to be the case for M.K., she jumps headlong into trouble.

My Review

Well fans, our time on Windmill Farm has come to an end. The Lesson is third and final chapter in Suzanne Woods Fisher’s series Stoney Ridge Seasons.  Although I am sad to be packing up and leaving Stoney Ridge I can honestly say Suzanne has really out done herself with this book. From book one Mary Kate Lapp has demanded attention so for her to have a book that is all about MK, well that’s pretty special. Mary Kate has always reminded me of a Broadway actress who commands the stage with self-confidence. Not in your face self-confidence…no, she has a kind of confidence that is charming and endearing mixed in with a real zest for life. Is she a bit high-strung? Of course!  That’s why we love her. The relationship between MK and Jimmy Fisher is still a friendship made for the record books. Jimmy’s antics are so over the top and he made me chuckle on more than one occasion. I love how one minute Suzanne has you laughing so hard and the very next chapter your heart will ache with overwhelming emotion for two new characters, Chris and Jenny Yoder. Their story will definitely pull at your heartstrings. The Lesson will once again catapult you back into the life and times of the Lapp family who are with a doubt my favorite fictional family. As I wrap up my rambling, I hope that I have encouraged you to get to know the wonderful people of Stoney Ridge because trust me you will be happy that you did. Oh, did I mention that the book starts off with a murder?

About the Book:

When Sadie Lapp steps off the bus in Stoney Ridge after being in Ohio for the winter, she is faced with a decision–one that goes against her very essence. Yet it’s the only way she can think of to protect a loved one.

Schoolteacher Gideon Smucker has been crazy about Sadie since boyhood. But his response to her surprising decision undermines his own reputation–and his relationship with Sadie.

College student Will Stoltz is spending the spring at the Lapp farm as a guard for a pair of nesting Peregrine Falcons–courtesy of the Lancaster County Game Warden. Will needs to get his life back on track, but his growing friendship with Sadie threatens his plans.

The lives of these three individuals intertwine, and then unravel as unexpected twists create ripples through the town of Stoney Ridge . . . and through Sadie’s heart.

Once again, bestselling author Suzanne Woods Fisher intrigues and delights with a story that explores the bonds of friendship, family, and true love. Readers will enjoy every surprise in Sadie’s story as they search for the truth hidden within these pages.

Meet Suzanne:

Suzanne Woods Fisher’s interest in the Amish began with her grandfather, W.D. Benedict, who was raised Plain. Suzanne has a great admiration for the Plain people and believes they provide wonderful examples to the world. In both her fiction and non-fiction books, she has an underlying theme: You don’t have to “go Amish” to incorporate many of their principles–simplicity, living with less, appreciating nature, forgiving others more readily– into your life.

When Suzanne isn’t writing or bragging to her friends about her first new grand-baby  she is raising puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind.

To Suzanne’s way of thinking, you just can’t take life too seriously when a puppy is tearing through your house with someone’s underwear in its mouth.

My Review

The Keeper was one of my favorite books this year, and I was wondering how Suzanne Woods Fisher would follow up to such a wonderful book. Boy did she deliver! The Haven is absolutely a top notch book written in a way only Suzanne can write. We are back at Windmill Farms and into the Lapp household once again. Sadie has returned from Ohio and has brought an unexpected surprise with her. The Amish grapevine is at work and rumors start swirling about Sadie. Feeling shocked and saddened at her community’s lack of faith in her, Sadie is certain her tarnished image will never be the same. How can everyone just assume the worst in her, even Gideon Smucker, the one person she feels a strong connection with? Life on the farm is somewhat chaotic because a set of falcons have decided to make the farm their new home. This in turn brings along Will Stoltz, a man with a few secrets up his sleeve. He has been hired to keep an eye on the birds but ends up keeping an eye on Sadie. Do you smell a love triangle in the making?

I loved being back in Stoney Ridge! My anticipation to read this book has always been high and the day it arrived I immediately tore open the package, immersing myself back into the lives of the Lapp family. Suzanne does this to me….her books are like eating my favorite dessert all day long. If you put one in front of me I will devour it in record time, much like a box of glazed donuts. The Haven was no different. It was deliciously delightful with sweet and savory characters. It warmed my heart to see how far Sadie has come since we last read about her when she was a shy and awkward girl. I found myself laughing out loud on several occasions courtesy of the spunky Mary Kate Lapp, who I think steals the spotlight.

As I turned the last page my mind was thinking of the perfect way to sum of this book.  A random movie quote from Shrek the Ogre popped into my head…..yes you read correctly, I said Shrek! He said Ogres are like onions….Onions have layers. Ogres have layers. The Haven is not just another Amish fiction book. It is a book with layers. Layers that are beautifully woven together to tell a story that you won’t soon forget.

The Keeper – Book Tour

About the book:

Julia Lapp has planned on marrying Paul Fisher since she was a girl. Now twenty-one, she looks forward to their wedding with giddy anticipation. When Paul tells her he wants to postpone the wedding–again–she knows who is to blame. Perpetual bachelor and spreader of cold feet, Roman Troyer, the Bee Man.

Roamin’ Roman travels through the Amish communities of Ohio and Pennsylvania with his hives full of bees, renting them out to farmers in need of pollinators. He relishes his nomadic life, which keeps him from thinking about all he has lost. He especially enjoys bringing his bees to Stoney Ridge each year. But with Julia on a mission to punish him for inspiring Paul’s cold feet, the Lapp farm is looking decidedly less pleasant.

Can Julia secure the future she’s always dreamed of? Or does God have something else in mind?

About Suzanne:

Her interest in the Amish began with her grandfather, W.D. Benedict, who was raised Plain. She has many, many Plain relatives living in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and travels back to Pennsylvania, as well as to Ohio, a couple of times each year for research.

When Suzanne isn’t writing or bragging to her friends about her first new grandbaby (!), she is raising puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind. To Suzanne’s way of thinking, you just can’t take life too seriously when a puppy is tearing through your house with someone’s underwear in its mouth.

My Review

This book is set on Windmill Farm located in the fictional town of Stoney Ridge, Pennsylvania. The Lapp children: Julia, Sadie, Menno and Mary Kate are struggling to keep the farm up and running. Their father is in need of a heart transplant but refuses to even consider getting on the transplant list. Julia has just been told for the second time that her fiancé Paul wants to postpone their wedding. Julia knows who is to blame for her groom’s cold feet the infamous “Bee Man.” Mr. Roman Troyer known as the “Bee Man” travels around with his bees renting them out to Amish farmers for pollination, and he is not at all the marrying kind. He is mysterious, handsome, and a loner. The young men in the community wish to be him, and all the ladies wish to be with him. Julia is having none of his charming ways and is determined to win back Paul’s heart. Roman decides to stay and help out with the farm. Julia has much resentment for Roman but is grateful for the help. The Bee Man has never met a woman quite like Julia. Strong-willed and not at all fazed by his charms. Will Roman overcome his fear of settling down and open his heart to Julia? Will her fiancé come back into the picture? There is so much to discover in this absolutely wonderful book! The characters are so intriguing and well written. You will simply fall in love with this family. I was especially moved by Menno’s story. This book really brings to light an important topic of organ donation. Suzanne writes about this topic with a real knowledge. I laughed; I cried and was thoroughly impressed by this book. This is a must read! The second book cannot come quick enough. Happy Reading!
