The Alpine Hills Museum by Kelly Kuhn, Museum Curator and Director

The Alpine Hills Museum and Sugarcreek Information Center should be the first stop on any visitors list of “to-dos” in Amish Country. Our quaint village is set off of State Route 39 down in what feels like a valley from a Grimm Brothers fairytale. As soon as a guest makes the turn off of SR 39 it’s like being transported back in time where the pace instantly slows down, the greetings are warmer, and the food is always the best.

Our main street is lined with beautiful Swiss style buildings that will have you wondering when you traveled to Switzerland. In the heart of this dreamlike village is the Alpine Hills Museum. The bright blue building decorated in Edelweiss, Alpenrose, and Eucin flowers is irresistible and begs to be explored. When you step inside one of our outstanding volunteers greets you and invites you to tour the three floors, at no cost of course. Browse the gift shop for items sure to please those that love the Amish and/or the Swiss heritage of our area. A 12 minute video is your first stop on the self-guided tour. The video explains the Amish lifestyle, Swiss cheese making, our Swiss heritage, and our annual Ohio Swiss Festival.

After viewing the video head back the hall to begin touring. Our first floor features multiple displays such as an Amish Kitchen, a cheese house, a woodworking shop, and a recreation of the 1890-mid 1900’s Budget Newspaper display. All of these displays feature audio/visual options. Don’t miss the Swiss costumes; lederhosen, dirndls, and trachtens.

After seeing everything on the first floor make your way to the basement. Farming equipment, an antique buggy, a rare photographer’s carriage, a black smith shop, a firehouse display and much more await you. From the basement continue all the way up the staircase to the second floor. This floor has something for everyone. Stunning Victorian dresses and accessories are displayed delicately amongst Victorian Era furniture. An authentic Shoe-Shine Station sits beside and early 1900’s barbershop display. Our tribute to America’s Armed Forces is sure to make any veteran proud. Uniforms from many American wars are proudly displayed. Antique guns, doctor’s house-call bags, embalming equipment, and arrowheads are sure to entertain young boys. The music room features stunning Alphorns as well as movie props from “Love Finds You in Sugarcreek, Ohio”.

Be sure to watch the video of our greatest benefactor, Ranson Andreas, playing the Alphorns and Dulcimer. Before leaving our lobby to explore the rest of the enticing village try playing the Alphorn we have at the front desk. We would be more than happy to get it down for you. Also, make sure to ask our volunteers any and all questions you have about the area, the museum, the Amish, the Swiss, and our rich history.

If the volunteer can’t answer the question they will find someone who can. Pick up helpful brochures and get directions to any local locations then enjoy the rest of your visit to the endearing “Little Switzerland of Ohio”.

Lehman’s – A Link to the Past and A Road to the Future (Guest Post)

amish-hats-at-storeIn 1955, 26-year-old Jay Lehman opened a tiny hardware store in the village of Kidron, Ohio. But this wasn’t just any small business start-up. Jay wanted to provide goods that the local Amish people needed. “I was concerned that someday the Amish would not be able to maintain their simple ways of life because these products would no longer be available,” he said.

Jay stocked his store with non-electric goods like oil lamps, wood-burning stoves, wringer washing machines and, later, gas-powered refrigerators. His vision was to preserve the past for future generations – a vision that’s expanded far beyond our Amish community!

Jay’s small shop in Kidron has grown into a 35,000-square-foot destination welcoming thousands of visitors each year. Gathering four pre-Civil War era buildings under one soaring roof and stocking thousands of products you probably thought weren’t made anymore, Lehman’s is a place for people to embrace the past and learn how they can make old-time skills part of their “modern” lifestyles.

Growing a garden, canning food, making cheese, keeping livestock, burning wood for fuel, cooking and baking from scratch – these are all skills our current society is rediscovering with a passion. With 60 years of experience, we are now positioned as the go-to experts on all things old-fashioned, which are now undeniably “in fashion!”

Today, we ship products all over the world through our print catalog and online store (Lehmans.com). With a strong presence on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram and YouTube, we like to joke that we use “high-tech to sell low-tech.” The company may be much bigger, but the heart of Lehman’s remains the same: to help our customers live a simpler life.

In a beautiful twist, the Amish are now some of our most trusted vendors. Lehman’s now offers top-quality products made by Amish artisans from Ohio and beyond – everything from leather belts, to stovetop canners, to handcrafted furniture pieces and woven baskets. And so, six decades later, Jay Lehman is still helping the Amish maintain their way of life by supporting their home-based manufacturing businesses.

Besides the Amish, our loyal customers include missionaries, homesteaders, cabin dwellers, the chronically nostalgic, and even Hollywood set designers looking for historically accurate period pieces. We remain a family-owned and operated business, with Jay’s son Galen Lehman and daughter Glenda Lehman Ervin joining their father in his life’s work.

Our humble beginnings and Jay’s original vision keep Lehman’s grounded in our mission to provide “Simple Products for a Simpler Life.” Come see us in Kidron or connect with us online! We’d love to meet you.

Building on the success of last year’s UP original film Love Finds You in Sugarcreek, the original UP Premiere Movie Love Finds You In Charm (#LoveFindsYou) is a romantic drama about a beautiful, young Amish woman – seemingly with it all – who jumps at the chance to spend autumn in scenic Charm, Ohio with relatives and finds herself pulled between two worlds and two men.  The movie stars Trevor Donovan (Texas Rising, “90210”), Danielle Chuchran (Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat, UP’s Nowhere Safe), Drew Fuller (“Army Wives,” “Charmed”), Tiffany Dupont (“Greek,” “The Bedford Diaries”).  Love Finds You In Charm exclusively premieres on Sunday, June 7 at 7 p.m. EDT / 6 p.m. PDT.   This romance is the second in UP’s “Love Finds You” movie franchise.

Filmed in Charm and Sugarcreek, Ohio, the heart of Amish country, the movie was directed Terry Cunningham (UP’s Love Finds You In Sugarcreek, Jack Hunter and the Lost Treasure of Ugarit), and produced by George Shamieh and Mission Pictures in association with Guideposts.  Based on the popular novel by best-selling author Annalisa Daughety (“Walk in the Park” series, Wedding to Remember), the adapted screenplay was written by Bryar Freed-Golden (UP’s April 12th film The Music In Me, Paper Angels and Love Finds You In Sugarcreek).  The ensemble cast also includes Kaitlyn Sapp (UP’s Love Finds You In Sugarcreek), Dawn Lafferty (Reversal, Timequest), Kellen Boyle (Beautiful Sin, Chasing Death), Rohn Thomas (The Ides of March, The Mothman Prophecies) and newcomers Meg Wittman, Belle Fockler and Nick Petrus.  Features the original song, “Be Here,” performed by singer-songwriter Katie Herzig (whose music is frequently featured on “Grey’s Anatomy”) and written by Herzig, Seth Jones & Catt Gravitt.

Young Emma Miller (Danielle Chuchran) would appear to be lucky. This beautiful Amish girl has a loving family and the community’s most eligible young man, Jacob (Kellen Boyle), wants to marry her.  But she has more on her mind than buggies, bonnets and making her special goat cheese – Emma is secretly obsessed with Jane Austin’s Pride and Prejudice and restlessly longs for adventure and travel.  When given the opportunity to spend the season helping her widowed cousin Lydia (Meg Wittman) in scenic Charm, Ohio, Emma jumps at the chance. There she meets an Englischer, librarian Kelly Bennett (Tiffany Dupont), who has come to town to escape her chaotic life.  Despite their differences, the two become fast friends.  Settling into her cousin’s farm, Emma finds Noah (Trevor Donovan) – a striking, well-read, young Amish man who helps work the farm – intriguing, yet vexing.   So when Emma’s cheese attracts the attention of a local bed-and-breakfast and a handsome wine-and-cheese blog editor, Andy (Drew Fuller), she finds herself pulled between two worlds and two men.  Emma must decide whether to stay amongst the Amish, or leave behind everyone and everything she’s ever known to venture out into the world.

Following up on the tremendous success of last year’s Love Finds You In Sugarcreek on UP, Love Finds You in Charm is a spectacularly shot romantic drama, filled with strong values as expressed through Amish traditions and faith,” said Barbara Fisher, senior vice president of programming, UP.  “Actress Danielle Chuchran radiantly expresses Emma’s restless journey, and she has real chemistry on screen with romantic leads Trevor Donovan and Drew Fuller, who represent the two paths from which Emma has to choose.

Author Annalisa Daughety (www.annalisadaughety.com) writes contemporary fiction set in historic locations. After graduating from Freed-Hardeman University, she spent time working as a park ranger for the National Park Service. This experience led her to write the Walk in the Park series – each book in the series is set in a different national park.  Annalisa has written several Love Finds You™ novels, including Love Finds You in Charm, Ohio, Love Finds You in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and Love Finds You at Home for Christmas.  After 37 years of singlehood, she finally found her happily ever after in 2013.  She and her husband live in rural Arkansas and are learning the art of chicken and goat farming.

The “Love Finds You™” book series was launched in October 2008 by Guideposts imprint Summerside Press with the goal to give readers a taste of local life across America.  Each of the almost 60 novels to date – by revolving authors, including Daughety –  draws on the compelling history or unique character of a real place, such as Charm, Ohio.  Learn more at www.ShopGuideposts.org/love-finds-you.
